Cox Park, a non-profit recreational facility in Ladera Ranch, CA uses 237,056 kWh of electricity primarily lighting the soccer fields at night. With help from Revel Energy, Cox Park installed a commercial solar canopy to generate free electricity credits during the day. Unused electricity is delivered to “the grid” accruing credits for the sports park to use when the system is not generating energy (i.e. at night).
This program is called Net Energy Metering or NEM, utility companies like Edison, PG&E, and SDG&E use NEM to determine a business’ discounted electricity bill. Revel Energy worked with Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation (Non-profit owner/operator of Cox Park) to design and install the ideal commercial solar system. The right sized system would reduce the park’s energy bills and maximize their return on investment.
Energy consumed by the park on wasn’t significant until after 7 pm every day. During the day while the sun is out, the park’s usage flattens at its lowest usage rate.
The fields use artificial turf eliminating the need for irrigation pumps. The shrubbery is irrigated with an energy efficient drip system. That leaves the lighting at night as the major user of electricity for the park. NEM and the commercial solar canopy developed by Revel Energy offset the bulk of leftover energy usage.
